What is a cherry picker?

A cherry picker, also known as a boom, is a machine used to provide temporary access for people and equipment, to difficult to reach, or inaccessible areas at height. It enables operators to move up and over obstacles, providing precision and versatility in accessing hard to reach areas.

The phrase 'cherry picker' is broad term used to also refer to booms, stick booms, stick boom lifts, aerial work platforms (AWPs), elevating work platforms (EWPs), and mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs).

The term cherry picker originates from the use of the machines in orchards, to do what it says on the tin and pick cherries.
